The Federation of Beekeepers’ Associations of Montenegro is an organization of farmers of Montenegro and it has the largest membership of all. The said organization consists of 23 beekeepers’ associations, which are mainly municipal-based. All the Associations belong to the category of NGOs.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development implements Beekeeping Development Program through The Federation of Beekeepers’ Associations of Montenegro, which coordinates the activities of all municipal beekeepers’ associations.  The organization gathers more than 2,000 beekeepers and practically represents the entire beekeeping industry in Montenegro. 

According to the 2010 Agricultural Census, 2,533 holdings in Montenegro are involved in beekeeping and they possess some 50,024 honey bee colonies, or 20 honey bee colonies per household on average. Langstroth Root and Dadant Blatt are the most common beehive types in Montenegro. The total annual honey products range between 300 and 500 tons. Only a small share of the said production is marketed through retailers, whereas the major share is sold through green markets or through the so called doorstep selling.

The stationary beekeeping makes 60% of the total beekeeping technology; while the rest belongs to migratory beekeeping.

The amount of honey per beehive:

10-30 kg in stationary beekeeping

20-60 kg in migratory beekeeping

The average annual consumption is 1.5 kg per capita
